Children’s Music Ministry
First Baptist Church Duluth |
To engage children in musical activities that promote and prepare them to lead and experience a Christ-like lifestyle as they grow physically and spiritually and equip them to live, witness and worship our living Lord through music.

Dear Parents,This summer is the 29th musical that our Summer Music Workshop has staged. Our summer music camp is offered to children who have completed Grades 1 through 7 in May 2008. Because children love music, this is an excellent tool for teaching children about God and His love. This one- week music workshop is designed to offer music and worship experiences that provide a foundation for spiritual growth.
“Praise Rocks” teaches kids that no matter how bad their daily life gets, God expects and desires their praise. Through drama and song, “Praise Rocks” declares that when you hit rock bottom, there are always many reasons to praise God.
For the second year at noon on Thursday of Summer Music Workshop, the musical will be performed in its entirety at the Brown Bag Lunch series in downtown Duluth. Immediately following, our children will have our traditional Water Day in the fountain. We will transport the children to and from the church by bus. This Thursday presentation does not replace our Sunday presentation at 6 p.m. in the worship center.
Make plans to be here as we explore how the very rocks will cry out in praise to God, it His people do not learn how to praise Him.

Our children’s music ministry involves children from age 2 through the fifth grade. All Kidz Khoirs meet from 6 p.m. until 6:45 p.m. each Wednesday night during the school year (beginning on Wednesday, August 23 this year). Their leaders are dedicated Christians who enjoy sharing the love of God through music. The Kidz Khoirs present three major programs each year: a Christmas program, a recognition program in the spring and the Summer Music Workshop in July.
Our children’s music activities are planned as building blocks from year to year. The program is designed to develop the musical skills as our children learn to lead in the worship experience as adults. Thank-you for your interest in developing your child’s musical appreciation.

Hymn Treasures is a hymn memorization program for children 3 years old through fifth grade. It includes a different age-appropriate study each year to be mainly accomplished at home. Parents can purchase a kit for $5 that includes a book and cassette of the hymns.
Music and Missions Fifth Wednesday is an opportunity for our children to place in action the skills and knowledge learned each Wednesday with those in nursing homes in our area. Our fourth- and fifth-graders lead in the fall, and our second- and third-graders lead in the spring.
Musician of the Month is for a boy and girl chosen from each of our older children’s musical groups, based on attendance and willingness to learn and experience new activities. Those chosen attend an art event of music and/or drama with the children’s music coordinator. This is an opportunity for the children to experience different aspects of the arts and the way in which it can be used in a worship setting.
Summer Music Workshop is for children who have finished the first through the seventh grades. This week provides the opportunity to learn and present a musical, study hymns of our faith, instrumental activities for the younger children and four 45-minute instrument classes for the older children.
From the age of 2, our children begin to move to the steady beat of music. Each year they explore their own singing voice, learn to clap simple rhythm patterns and learn to play non-pitched instruments. This is a time of exploration and preparation to reading music.
During these three years, our children are learning how melodies move, to accompany music with instrumental chording, learning music symbols and how to read music. They begin to add pitched instruments to their songs. This group will sing in a Sunday-morning worship service at least once during the year along with participating in both the Christmas and recognition programs.
Our young musicians are divided into a boy’s and a girl’s musical groups. These children are beginning to sing in parts and learning to apply the singing techniques that were begun in Music Makers. This group is becoming very proficient at music reading. They will sing in a Sunday-morning worship service at least once during the year, along with participating in both the Christmas and recognition programs.
